A Northeast Florida Barrier Island:  Amelia Island, FL

A "neighbor" to coastal Georgia

A barrier island adjacent to the Florida "mainland," Amelia Island is located at the top of the state of Florida, on the northeast coast, bordering Georgia.  The largest city nearest to Amelia Island is Jacksonville, Florida, located about 30 miles south of Amelia.  If your plans include driving here for a visit, there's no ferry to worry about -- two bridges connect Amelia to the rest of Florida.

Driving Directions

Depending whether you're traveling north or south on I-95, Amelia Island is the first/last exit in Florida near the Florida/Georgia border.  (Formerly exit 129, northeast Florida recently changed exit numbers along I-95.)  The Fernandina Beach, Yulee, Amelia Island exit is now #373 off I-95.  After exiting I-95 at the Yulee/Fernandina exit, follow A1A through Yulee for about 12 miles to the Shave Bridge, and you've arrived at this cozy island measuring approximately 2 miles wide and 13 miles long (about 18 square miles).

If you are traveling from Jacksonville, Florida going north on I-95, you can also take the Heckscher Drive exit off I-95, a very scenic route which brings you across the Talbot Islands and then directly onto Amelia Island's south-end.

Nearest Airport

Flying to Amelia Island is also easy. Apart from our island airport, the Fernandina Beach Municipal Airport (for private aircraft), the Jacksonville International Airport  (airport code JAX) is conveniently located only a 30 minute drive from Amelia Island (or two exits away, traveling on Interstate I-95).  The Jacksonville International Airport is located about 18 miles north of downtown Jacksonville, Florida. Jacksonville International Airport services Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia.
