Our St. Augustine-sodded lawns have been dormant for the winter months, but are now showing signs of revival.  A new lawn watering restriction schedule began on March 8, 2009.

Residents in the St. Johns River Water Management District in Florida are limited to watering landscapes twice a week, and never water during the day between 10 am and 4 pm. (Did you know that over 50% of a home's water use is on the lawn?) If you're trying to watch your budget in these difficult economic times, you may be able to shave some dollars off your water/sewer bills, if you comply with the regulations and set your sprinkler systems accordingly.

If your home has an odd numbered address (or no number), your watering days are Wednesdays and Saturdays. Homes with even addresses should water on Thursdays and Sundays. Non-residential properties are to water on Tuesdays and Fridays.

The St. Johns River Water Management District is large, and stretches from Fernandina Beach, Florida in the northeast, down the coast to Vero Beach, and as far west as Gainesville.

Here's what the St. Johns Water Management District web site says:

  • Daylight saving time:
Second Sunday in March until the first Sunday in November
  • Eastern Standard Time:
First Sunday in November until the second Sunday in March
  • Water only when needed and not between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
  • Water for no more than one hour per zone.
  • Restrictions apply to private wells and pumps, ground or surface water and water from public and private utilities.
  • Some exceptions apply.
