AMELIA ISLAND, FLORIDA, 911 -- Flags at half mast were seen this morning at beach homes here on this barrier island in northeast Florida. It’s September 11, 2009, a day to remember heroes and victims who died eight years ago. (Pictured is an Amelia Island beach house on South Fletcher Avenue in Fernandina Beach, Florida, flying an American flag at half mast.)

Amelia Islanders, with others around the nation, are showing respect on 911. Later today in the city of Fernandina along historic Centre Street, a Freedom Walk will take place starting at Central Park on Atlantic Avenue. The First Fernandina Beach Freedom Walk will honor those who perished in the 911 attacks and give recognition to the first responders that day.

Those wishing to participate should head to the Central Park gazebo on Atlantic Avenue at 5 pm today, Friday, Sept. 11. The walk will start at 5:30 heading west along the sidewalks of Atlantic Avenue (which turns into Centre Street), to the foot of Centre Street at the Fernandina Harbor (the Veteran’s Monument). The walk will be held rain or shine.

A short patriotic program will start at 6 pm with several local community leaders speaking briefly, to include Fernandina’s Mayor, Susan Steger, State Rep Janet Adkins, the city police and fire department’s chiefs, Jim Hurley and Dan Hanes, respectively.

The first 500 participants will receive American Flags. For further information about the Fernandina Beach Freedom Walk, contact Susan Parry at 904-261-0701 x. 117 or Sandy Price at 904-206-0756.
