One of the classiest events of the year held on the island approaches in March – the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance. To put this event into perspective, if James Bond visited Amelia Island, he'd be at the Concours (no doubt escorted by a beautiful girl, or two). Which car would catch Bond's fancy? Perhaps the rare 1959 Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder that will be auctioned (reportedly anticipated to go for around $2.9 million! )
This event attracts car enthusiasts at the very top of the market. It's the weekend when you will see more private jets parked at the Amelia Island Airport than any other time all year.
But even if you're not a car buff or elite collector, it's an amazing show to experience. If you wish to see some jaw-dropping vehicles, spend a few hours admiring the eye candy, from classic antique cars to glitzy race cars (and don't forget your camera).
This year in 2009, the honoree is David Hobbs. The main event is Sunday, March 15, 2009, where you can walk around the Summer Beach golf club fairway lined with vehicles, adjacent to the Amelia Island Ritz-Carlton (held rain or shine -- vehicles will be moved to tents if stormy).
Whether you like speed, flash or elegance, vehicles of your dreams will be on Amelia Island the weekend of March 14, 2009. You can also glimpse a few of the Concours show cars if you venture downtown to historic Fernandina on Friday, March 13, 2009 from around 11:30 to 2 pm -- they'll be parked along Centre Street.
